is this a crocodile or an aligator?

I can never tell which except that I Crocs are a lot larger.

Great shot.
I too was recently up close with a crocodile, but behind glass at the zoo. He was huge and frightening.

Indrani, he looks so amiable I can give him a kiss. It's a pity Steve Irwin is gone. As catching crocs was his specialty.

I came across with a living croc in my life when I was young. It was fun being chased by one. I had to run for my life.

Such a brave close up. But I hope the lens and the zoom did the trick for you.
